The Skills and Inquiry ECA strand is designed for intellectually curious students eager to expand their knowledge and develop analytical and problem-solving skills.
Students can join specialised interest groups such as Robotics Engineering, Coding Club and Model United Nations, where they engage with STEM fields, programming, global issues and international relations. These ECAs challenge students to apply their learning in real-world contexts, think critically and gain a deeper understanding of complex concepts.
By participating in these academically enriching and intellectually stimulating activities, students cultivate a spirit of inquiry and a passion for lifelong learning. These experiences not only sharpen essential skills but also broaden perspectives and lay a strong foundation for future academic and professional success.
Buzzing for Books
The exciting Buzzing for Books club allows children to dive in and discover the wonderful world of books. Sit back and enjoy as Mrs Sharman, plus a guest reader, read their favourite picture books from the library.
Mandarin
The EYFS Mandarin Club lets your children to explore the Chinese language and its culture through various enrichment activities in Mandarin, such as storytelling, singing and Chinese handcrafts.
Creative Writing
Years 3–4
The Creative Writing ECA is a welcoming space for students who have a passion for imaginative writing. In this ECA, we will be crafting stories, penning poetry and exploring new ideas. We will encourage students to embrace their individuality as they write independently and connect with fellow writers who share their love for creativity.
Students who participate in this ECA may create a collaborative book that will be placed in our library. A selection of the writing from some students may also be selected to be part of our yearbook.
Kung Fu-Tai Chi
Years 3–6
This dynamic club offers a unique blend of traditional martial arts, focusing on self-awareness and physical wellbeing. Children will learn fundamental stances, movements and breathing techniques, building coordination, balance and agility. Through the graceful flow of Tai Chi and the energetic practice of Kung Fu, they'll develop self-control, respect and confidence. This ECA is a fantastic opportunity to enhance physical fitness while exploring a rich cultural heritage. No prior experience is needed – just a willingness to learn and grow!
Mandarin Club
Years 4–6
Mandarin Homework Club caters to Year 4–6 students who need support with their weekly Mandarin homework.
Students will try to finish their weekly Mandarin homework within the session and are free to ask questions about it. They are required to bring their Mandarin homework with them to the club.
Audio Visual
Years 5–6
In this course, you will learn how to set up audio equipment for live events like the drama production, DBIS Live, and the Remembrance Day service. In addition to that, you will also learn how to set up and control the projector that is used for assemblies. You will gain a better understanding of the type of microphone to be used depending on the instrument or other requirements and will learn how to operate the audio mixer and the lighting console. You will also learn how to set up for live streaming on YouTube and other social media platforms by linking a video camera and the audio equipment.
Young Entrepreneurs
Years 5–6
Unlock your entrepreneurial spirit and learn to turn your big ideas into reality. This ECA will guide you through identifying problems, ideating solutions and designing innovative products or services. Develop critical thinking, problem-solving and teamwork skills as you navigate the exciting world of entrepreneurship. Gain valuable insights into market research, product development and marketing strategies. Collaborate with your peers to create and pitch your business proposals, learning from the feedback and expertise of industry mentors. Cultivate an entrepreneurial mindset, and discover the thrill of turning your dreams into tangible, successful enterprises.
Battle of the Books
Years 5–6
Battle of the Books involves students reading a fabulous list of 20 carefully chosen novels and coming together with Mrs Foti to discuss and test their knowledge of the books they have read. The ECA runs from September through to April and culminates in a team of 12 students attending a competition against other Hong Kong schools in May. This club typically appeals to students who really enjoy reading for pleasure and are keen to read across a range of genres.
Debating
Years 5–13
For Primary students, our Year 5–6 Debating ECA is a chance to develop key skills in public speaking, critical thinking and confidence. You'll learn the art of formal debate and have the opportunity to compete against students from other schools. To apply, simply email Mr Silver a one-minute video arguing for or against the topic: 'Movies are better than books'.
Please note that due to limited spaces, this is an invitation-only club.
In Secondary, all students have the opportunity to join the debate club, with no entry criteria.
Robotics
Years 3–9
This hands-on club will provide a fantastic introduction to the dynamic world of robotics using the versatile and engaging VEX GO robotics kits. Students will embark on exciting challenges, learning to design, build and program their robots. More than just assembling parts, they will explore the fundamental principles of engineering, grasp the logic of coding, and develop critical thinking skills as they troubleshoot and refine their creations.
Chinese Calligraphy
Join our Chinese Calligraphy ECA to delve into the ancient art of brush and ink. Learn traditional character strokes and fundamental techniques, transforming simple characters into expressive works. This club offers a serene environment to develop a sophisticated skill, understand cultural aesthetics and experience the calming mindfulness of this unique art form. All materials are provided. Unleash your creativity!
Model United Nations
Step into the shoes of a global leader with our Model United Nations (MUN) ECA! This is a fantastic opportunity to develop critical thinking, public speaking and negotiation skills. You'll research global challenges, understand geopolitical dynamics and work with peers to advocate for your nation's interests. Immerse yourself in the world of diplomacy, gain a nuanced understanding of sustainable development and human rights and learn to build consensus.
Wellbeing Club
Be part of the Wellbeing Committee, which focuses on ways that, as a school, we can prioritise student wellbeing. Learn valuable skills to gather student voice and to implement initiatives that support this. Be part of running themed events that will navigate and support the challenges young people face. Let's cultivate emotional intelligence and a balanced and happy life.
Chess Club
Join our Chess Club for weekly sessions to learn and master the game! Whether you're a complete beginner or an aspiring grandmaster, this club is for you. We'll cover everything from the basics to advanced tactics and openings, helping you sharpen your strategic thinking. Our goal is to develop individual skills and potentially form a competitive team to play against other schools in Hong Kong. This club is primarily for Secondary students, but talented Primary players are welcome to join. Get ready to challenge your mind and make your move!
Young Reporters
Uncover the stories that matter! In Young Reporters, you'll learn the essential skills of journalism, from interviewing and research to crafting compelling news articles, features and opinion pieces. Develop your critical thinking, writing prowess and keen observation as you report on school events, local issues and topics that resonate with you. This club is perfect for budding writers and those eager to make their voices heard. Get ready to investigate, inform and inspire! You will be contributing to the school newsletter and yearbook!
Conversation Circles
Students will take part in a variety of fun, engaging activities in a warm and welcoming environment by discussing current and interesting issues/themes. Sessions will begin with warm-up conversation games or trivia quizzes leading to extended conversations based on movie clips, magazine and newspaper articles and news reels. There will also be opportunities to debate on global issues as well as plan for and organise charity events within the school community.
Guitar Maintenance & Setup
Learn the essential skills to care for your acoustic, electric or bass guitar, ukulele or mandolin! This ECA is a hands-on introduction to keeping your fretted instruments in top condition. You'll discover how they work, master string changing and fretboard cleaning and understand the role of the truss rod. We'll cover correct intonation setup and even how to diagnose potential issues when choosing a new instrument. Ideal for any player or enthusiast, this club will empower you to get the best possible performance and longevity from your beloved instrument.
