At DBIS, EdVentures in the Primary School are intentionally designed to extend learning beyond the classroom and into the natural, cultural and social landscapes of Hong Kong and the region. Through a carefully structured and progressive model, students develop curiosity, confidence, practical skills and a deep connection to place, while making meaningful links to the Discovery curriculum.
Students participate in weekly Forest School sessions and scheduled Beach School experiences that provide regular, hands-on opportunities to explore, inquire and learn in outdoor environments. These experiences nurture independence, collaboration, problem-solving and wellbeing, while fostering a strong sense of environmental stewardship.
Learning outdoors is not an add-on, rather, it is a consistent and valued part of the learning experience that supports both personal development and curriculum outcomes.
Practical learning is further enriched through woodworking experiences that are thoughtfully connected to curriculum units. Students learn to use tools safely, plan and construct simple projects and reflect on the design process.
These sessions build resilience, creativity, fine motor skills and confidence while reinforcing links to mathematics, design thinking and inquiry learning.
EdVentures are embedded within the Discovery curriculum, ensuring that experiences are purposeful, relevant and closely aligned with classroom learning. In addition to on-campus outdoor learning, students participate in curriculum-linked day trips such as visits to Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden, cultural sites, and local environments that deepen understanding and spark authentic inquiry.
These experiences allow students to see learning come to life, connecting concepts studied in class with real-world contexts.
From Year 2 onwards, students take part in whole-year trips that form part of a carefully sequenced progression model within Hong Kong. Each year builds on the last, supporting students to develop their independence, responsibility and confidence, while maintaining age-appropriate challenge and support.
This journey culminates in Year 6, where students participate in their first international expedition. Aligned with a curriculum unit and investigation focusing on flora and fauna, this experience provides a powerful capstone to the Primary EdVentures journey, integrating learning, adventure and global awareness.
